Modern Quilts Illustrated

If your love the designs of Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr of Modern Quilt Studio (formerly Fun Quilts), you already know about their new publication, Modern Quilts Illustrated.  I recently received issue #2 and I wanted to review this new series of publications for you today.

Don’t expect a big magazine full of ads.  I would call this publication a booklet, rather than a magazine.  It is 18 pages of high quality content on high quality paper. There are four projects in issue #2; two quilts, a wall hanging and a pillow. Each project is made up in fabric and illustrations are provided for three additional color ways. The wall hanging project is an applique project (pictured), the others are pieced.  Each project includes clear illustrations for construction. I believe the publication schedule is quarterly.

Modern Quilt Studio sells a limited number of kits for each project, but also provides the style numbers of all the fabrics used in the project if you want to shop your stash or your favorite fabric retailer. The pillow project is illustrated in all solid fabrics and the other projects utilize both solid and print fabrics.  One of the quilts features Free Spirit fabric designed by David Butler’s (aka Amy’s husband). Love it! As with all of Bill and Week’s designs, the quilt top is the star and the quilting is secondary.  The quilting on their quilts is an overall design that compliments the quilt top.

The photography and styling in this publication is so beautiful! You will want to subscribe just for the eye candy. But that’s not all – there are also other short pieces on tools, tips, products and books that the duo recommends. This particular issue has a tutorial on making a hanging sleeve and planning your quilting. Issue #1 has instructions for making a design wall and using plush fleece backings. There is also included with each issue a “Palette Chasing” article, demonstrating the exploration of different color combinations.

Bill and Weeks have recently re-branded their company from Fun Quilts to Modern Quilt Studio.  Their new website, is under construction and will re-direct you to the Fun Quilts website. On Facebook type Modern Quilt Studio in the search field. Week’s blog, Craft Nectar, can be found at Their studio is in Chicago and you can call the studio to order a subscription or kit at 704-445-1817.

This husband and wife team designs fabric, writes books and patterns and designs great looking quilts. If you are a traditional quilter that wants to venture into the modern quilt movement, I think this is just the publication for you. If you already consider yourself a modern quilter or modern quilter wannabe, you will absolutely love this publication. Bill and Weeks are currently at Quilt Market in Cincinnati. Call them next week when they return and order a subscription (I believe issue #1 is still available).  Their website currently is not an e-commerce site; however, I am hoping that their new website will be. When I called, I got to talk to Weeks.  She is delightful to talk to!

Find sometime creative to do today, even if it is writing a blog post.  It will enrich your life ~ Lora

  1. It’s nice of you to share such information and your impressions. Though I’ve heard of them, I’m not familiar with their work… until just now! Thanks!
